What is coptic binding?
Coptic stitch is one of the oldest bookbinding methods still in use, and it dates back to the second century and early Christian Egypt. Pages are typically sewn directly into the cover with a chain stitch along the spine that holds the text block in place. The book lies completely flat when open, which is wonderful for art and journaling because you're not battling the spine tension . And, honestly, it just looks cool. The exposed spine shows the stitching and beadwork. Every coptic bound book at Kinhollow is sewn by hand.
What paper is inside?
Most books are made with one of two paper types: 65lbs writing/sketching paper for journaling, note-taking, and pencil or pen work. This is designed for dry media but works well with fountain pens. The other is 96lbs mixed media paper, which handles wet media including watercolor, gouache, and ink washes. Because of that, it can get wet without disintegrating.
Each listing specifies the paper type. Occasional specialty papers appear in limited runs and are noted in the product description.
Are your books fountain pen friendly?
Yes, but the writing/sketching and the mixed media paper handle it well. Great paper weight contains the bleed-through with most inks. The mixed media paper has a light texture that some fountain pen users love and others don't, depending on the nib. If you're a dedicated fountain pen user, the writing/sketching journals are your best bet.
How do I care for my book?
It's best to keep it out of prolonged and direct sunlight because the fabric cover can fade over time, just like any textile. Also, paper and water aren't good friends so don't store it somewhere damp. To clean up spots on the cover, use a barely damp cloth. It will handle most fabric surfaces, but test a corner first. The binding itself is sturdy and made to be used. Write in it. Carry it. Let it get a little soft at the edges. That's what it's for.
How often do you add new books?
I make books in batches, so new listings appear in groups rather than one at a time. The best way to know when something new lands is to join the email list. New books are announced there first.
Where can I find you in person?
The Events page lists all the craft fairs and maker markets I'm at around Pittsburgh. Seeing the books in-person is a great way to hold them and leaf through them before you commit.
Why does some inventory say "ships after [date]"?
Some books are photographed and listed before a fair, with shipping held until after the event. This protects the in-person inventory while letting you claim something you love before it's gone. If a book is marked with a ship date, it's yours. It will just take a few more days to get to you.
Do you take custom orders?
Not currently. Custom work depends on having the right fabric, the right paper, and the right timeline. Every material in the shop is sourced as I find it, so I can't promise to have specific materials on hand. If this changes in the future, I'll announce it via email and change the info here.
Do you have gift certificates?
Not at the moment. Since every book is one of a kind, and inventory shifts with each production run, a gift certificate could be more frustrating for the recipient than fun. The email list gets first access to new books, and that's the best way to get the book that's just right.
Do you ship internationally?
Yes.
